Activity Overview

Students use Clixo pieces to construct numbers, enhancing their understanding of geometric shapes and spatial reasoning. The activity begins with an introduction to Clixo pieces and basic shape concepts, followed by an exploration where students freely create, and build assigned numbers using templates and examples.

Materials

Introduce

Introduction (5 minutes):

Begin by introducing the lesson topic: "Today, we're going to explore how to create numbers using Clixo pieces."
Explain the relevance of the activity in integrating STEM and math skills.

Warm-up Activity (10 minutes):

Engage students in a brief warm-up activity to familiarize them with Clixo pieces.
Allow students to freely explore and manipulate the Clixo pieces to build simple shapes and structures.

Number Recognition (10 minutes):

Display the number templates on the whiteboard or chart paper.
Guide students in identifying and naming each number.
Discuss how each number is written and how many it stands for.

Demonstration (10 minutes):

Choose a number and demonstrate how to construct it using Clixo pieces.
Emphasize the process of connecting the pieces to form the shapes of the numbers.

Build & Create

Guided Practice (15 minutes):

Divide the class into small groups or pairs.
Distribute the number templates to each group.
Instruct students to use Clixo pieces to recreate the numbers they see on or alongside the templates.
Circulate the classroom to provide assistance and guidance as needed.

Independent Practice (10 minutes):

Provide each student with a blank piece of paper and markers.
Encourage students to choose a number and create it independently using Clixo pieces.
Students can then label their creations with the corresponding number using paper and markers (reminder to not draw on the Clixo pieces).

Share & Reflect

Share & Reflect (5 minutes):

Gather the students together and invite volunteers to share their creations.
Encourage students to describe their process and explain how they used the Clixo pieces to build their numbers.

Closure (5 minutes):

Recap the lesson by highlighting key concepts learned, such as number recognition and creative construction with Clixo pieces.
Connect the activity to the ISTE and Common Core standards by discussing how students used Clixo pieces to solve problems creatively, communicate their ideas, and apply knowledge of numbers.

Tips

Encourage students to work together and share their ideas with one another.
Challenge students to create simple math equations using Clixo pieces.
