Introduce

5 minutes

  • Definition of an optical illusion: An optical illusion is a distortion of perception. The brain arranges, sorts, and organizes data from the senses, leading to a perception that may be different from reality.
  • Review examples of optical illusions and discuss the concept in more detail.
  • Show how Clixo pieces can be arranged to create illusions that change with different perspectives.

Build & Create

15 minutes

Challenge:

  • How many different creations can you come up with in 15 minutes?
  • Encourage students to use Clixo pieces to create an illusion like the ones shown in the examples (Duck! Rabbit!).
  • Create something that can have 2 or more interpretations to it. If you see it from one view it can be one thing and when switched backwards, or flipped, or even viewed the same way it can appear to be something else.

Share & Reflect

5 minutes

  • Share and discuss creations with the class.
  • Ask students to describe what they see in each other's creations.

Example Questions:

  • What did you see in your creation?
  • Did your friends see the same thing or something different?
  • How did you use Clixo pieces to create different perspectives?
