Materials

Introduce

15 minutes

  • Gather the students and introduce the concept of time and clocks. Show them a real clock and ask questions to gauge their prior knowledge.
  • Explain that today they will be using Clixo pieces to learn about reading a clock.
  • Show them pictures or drawings of different clocks, both analog and digital. Discuss the different parts of a clock, such as the hour hand, minute hand, and numbers.

Build & Create

Activity 2: Building a Clixo Clock (20 minutes)

  • Distribute a piece of paper, markers, and the Clixo pieces to each student or small group.
  • Instruct the students to draw the outline of the clock, and write in the hour and minute 1-12 numbers.
  • Use the Clixo pieces to create the minute and hour hands and attach them to the paper clock by using Clixo pieces on both sides of the paper. They can use the various shapes and colors to represent each hand.
  • Encourage creativity and exploration while building the clock. Walk around the room to provide guidance and assistance as needed.

Activity 3: Show and Tell Time (15 minutes)

  • Once the students have completed building their Clixo clocks, gather them in a circle or designated area.
  • Using a large wall clock or a clock visual, demonstrate how to read the time on an analog clock. Explain the concept of the hour hand and the minute hand and how they work together.
  • Select a student to come forward and show their Clixo clock to the class. Ask them to explain how to read the time on their clock. Encourage other students to ask questions or make observations about the clock.
  • Repeat this process with other students until everyone has had a chance to share their Clixo clock and explain the time.

Activity 4: Time Challenge (20 minutes)

  • Divide the class into pairs or small groups.
  • Give each group a worksheet with various analog clock faces and a corresponding digital time written next to each clock.
  • Instruct the students to use their Clixo clocks to represent the time shown on each analog clock. They can adjust the position of the hour and minute hands on their Clixo clock to match the given time.
  • Set a timer or stopwatch and challenge the students to complete the worksheet within the allocated time. Encourage teamwork and collaboration within the groups.
  • Review the answers together as a class, discussing any difficulties or misconceptions that may have arisen.

Share and Reflect

  • Gather the students together and review what they have learned about reading a clock using Clixo.
  • Ask the students to reflect on their experience and share any new insights or discoveries they made during the activity.
  • Highlight the importance of understanding time and how it helps us in our daily lives.
  • Encourage the students to continue practicing reading analog clocks at home or in future activities.

Tips

  • Encourage students to work together and share their ideas with one another.
  • For more advanced activities, introduce concepts such as half past, quarter past, and quarter to.
  • Explore the concept of elapsed time by asking students to set their Clixo clocks to different times and calculating the duration between those times.
  • To encourage storytelling - ask students to describe what they do at different times of the day.
